Hi SWK

To be an operational fighter pilot, you have to train constantly and stay current on one type, not just in training hops but in near-as-real combat training such as Red/Green Flag exercises. To be able (or allowed) to do this on more than one type of aircraft at the same time would be unlikely.

In order to reduce the risk of secrets getting out, I would assume any air force personnel based at Groom would have to be more or less permanently detached to the base, rather than being regularly rotated out from Nellis. This would presumably apply to the aircraft as well. You may know more about this than I.

These guys would be specialists in their one particular type of aircraft, and it is very rare (but not unheard of) for maintenance or air crews to work on more than one type at once, even on more basic aircraft. But then again, I suppose Groom is a somewhat unusual place! Whatever the truth may be, it's an interesting conversation anyway. I still think Nellis is a more likely option.

BTW Joerg - I read Tom Mahood's account of his search for the A-12 that crashed 70mi east of Groom in 1967. Outstanding story, and something he should be proud of. It literally brought tears to my eyes! Has anyone else read this?
