Hi

I think you'll find most new advanced aircraft are studied by the USN as a carrier fighter replacement.
The RN considered the Typhoon as a replacement on its new conventional type design carriers to be built in a few years....
just the russians looked at the Su27 and Mig29...it became reality for them....

I think maybe AFM magazine did a stint on the F-22N consideration aswell as the JSF and various others such as the F-18F.
All navies with carriers consider using the advanced fighters that come to light....most just wivver away.
Take for example the RAF...they were once looking at a F-117B variant for their strike role...the RN expressed interest in a carrier based F-117B.
Why do you think the British AFFTC pilot and the RAF pilots were the first foreign pilots to fly the F-117...
Even before the USAF properly got their hands on the F-117 the British already had pilots flying it at tonopah test range...and thats a known fact...i have photos of the pilot from DERA who flew it.

The F-22 has undoubtably been looked at as a carrier aircraft.....as was many other aircraft.

As for the Joint Strike Fighter.
No-One at all can comment on how this fighter can replace the F-14 or the F-18...its not even in production and thus you cannot comment on what it can do.
They wouldnt make the fighter like it is if it didnt have strong replacement do's over older aircraft due for retirement.
With the USN expressing DEEP interest in the JSF as with the RN and USMC you can bet that if it comes to light it will replace the Tomcat and Hornet...and probably will be good at the job...

I am no F-22 fan....but i am also no fan of the JSF until i really know what it can do...
If they were to replace the F-14 with an F-22 then so be it...good choice however look at the cost.
The f-22 is NOT much more advanced than its counterparts...especially in Avionics where apparently it doesnt come close to the Typhoons suite...spending the money for just one f-22 could go somewhere else in the cheaper more suitable fighters L/O or not...
L/O isnt just the only way to go in the future...theres always a countermeasure for everything.
In the near future the Aircraft design teams will be muffled because stealth will become obsolete due to the immense amount of advanced systems coming out to detect stealth.
If you also look closely...no other country is really going the L/O way fast...they dont need to....Russia, Europe and various Asian countries are spending their money more wisely....which i think the USN will do in the future also....take one look at the F-18F....its a perfect stable strike and fighter platform....L/O its not, but it still kicks ass...which is more i can say for the f-117 and B-2 which STILL need ESCORTS, SEAD and support when doing a sortie such as Allied Force missions.....defeats the whole object of having stealth and shows how much money wasters the American Military and design teams are....

Sorry if the story went off on different subjects...but im bored.

Rich
