I spent far too much time in the 1990s and 2000s looking into this.

I was never able to find any evidence of the C-5.
IIRC, it was most likely a fouled towed decoy that resulted in a landing mishap of a RAF Tornado, not a secret aircraft.

I have never been able to find anything that could substantiate the idea of a classified US aircraft / demonstrator being operated in the UK during that time period. Sight sensitive aircraft really do no leave the restricted test ranges of the US.
