Steve Hauser over at desertsecrets.com spoke with Freeman and heard enough to believe he made such a trip. Put that in the FWIW category.

A person on foot could easily get far onto range if traveling at night, though the odds of being seen from weapons school aircraft would be high. You would really have to travel from 11PM until daylight. However, if you got close to Area 51, being spotted would be likely as security is stronger there.

My gut feeling is Freeman was a bit too old to do what he did, but you never know. Look at the Ballarat Bandit. He put special forces to shame.
