Hi Ian.
Glad you made it OK.
This indeed did sound like some engine test, OR with experience, and you have it too living nearby British Aerospace it could be a Taxi-Run.
Some aircraft do a quick burst of powerful thrust to rumble them down the taxi-way for a quick run before returning to the Hanger or ramp for further tests.

Of what you describe it doesnt sound like a B-2 as Joerg Mentions.
Ive seen and sat close to the B-2 taking off a few times and its very loud at all.
Also, seeing as you have heard B-1Bs take off....there isnt a USAF bird capable of making more noise than that....i know that for a fact as ive seen every damn USAF bird flying near enough many times before.

It was probably, infact most definately an engine test or taxi-run.
If what Meinrad Eberle reported is straight up, he mentions the 'fast mover' having gigantic engine nozzles/rear end in full reheat....if they are that big, then this could be your bird you 'Heard'.

It was obvious full reheat you heard....i dont think anything is that loud 13 miles away and behind a hill baffling the noise without reheat....

Good stuff
See you on our group Ian.
