Well, Richard, there are a few spots in that general vicinity where you can see bits and pieces of the Groom Lake runway. However, I very strongly advise people not to go and look for them on their own. Getting there is quite a challenge, even in a good 4WD. Roads are washed out, and the USGS maps of that area are outdated and incorrect. If thats all you rely on you will get lost, if not stuck in a whole network of 4WD roads. If you get there, after several hours of hiking, all you will see is pieces of the runway.
Also, the border in that area is not a straight line, and its very easy to cross it by accident. I found backroads in that area where there were no signs, only a fading orange post next to the road, to mark the border. And the ridges there are full of surveillance cameras.
You are right, though, on the maps it does look like you should have a nice and clear view, but unfortunately reality is a bit different.
