The article "USAF Aircraft Destroyed in Crash Believed to Be Stealth Fighter" in the July 21, 1986 issue of the Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine shows that by the late 1980s the Pentagon was going to find it very difficult to keep the F-117 Nighthawk hidden from the prying eyes of reliable aviation news reporters for much longer, yet it also provided hints that the designation for the Nighthawk was not F-19. A written reply by Anne W. Turner of the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force to R.W. Koch from August 1987 unintentionally dropped the first indication that F-117 was the actual designation for the Nighthawk, saying, "Our search disclosed no records, or knowledge of, a F-117 Night Hawk."
