After being told by Peter Merlin that the Lockheed Mach 5 Penetrator design was proposed in the early 1980s as a replacement for the SR-71, there may have been yet another reason that reports from early 1988 claimed that Lockheed was developing a Mach 6 spyplane which many publications erroneously associated the codename Aurora with, in addition to these reports mentioning Lockheed receiving $1.1 billion in government funding for 1988, and mention of the codename Aurora in the 1985 P-1 document next to TR-1 and SR-71 precipitating the belief that Aurora was the codename for an SR-71 successor. Whoever wrote the article about a supposed hypersonic spyplane in the November 1988 Popular Science issue probably knew that Lockheed designed the Mach 5 Penetrator as a high-performance spyplane with turboramjets for Mach 5 performance and just assumed that whichever aircraft might replace the SR-71 would be hypersonic.
