They YF-22 tests were well covered in the media at the time. The two prototype air vehicles, N22YF and N22YX, began flight trials in September and October 1990, respectively. The initial flight program ended in December 1990, with a cumulative total of 91.6 flight hours. N22YF was then shipped to Lockheed Georgia for use and an engineering mockup in support of F-22A development.

Testing with N22YX resumed in October 1991. The airplane logged another 61.6 flight hours before sustaining damage in a landing mishap in April 1992. All flights for both aircraft took place at Edwards.
