Have you listened to the interview yourself? I wouldn't really call it a mere sidenote and it's also totally understandable that the author has made such a big deal out of it given how until this point we were all settled on there being zero A-A capability for the jet.

Can't imagine the pilot would pull something like that out of his arse either, there's no real reason to do so.
