Well, now you are asking about something completely different. Military airplanes carry an "aircraft data block" stenciled on the left side of the fuselage. It usually includes aircraft type, serial number, and fueling information.

Example:

U.S. AIR FORCE B-58A-1-CF
A.F. SERIAL NO. 59-2440
SERVICE THIS A/C WITH GRADE
P-4 FUEL REF. T.O. 42B-1-14


I don't recall ever seeing this type of marking on the U-2. It was certainly not present on the CIA aircraft as identifying markings were kept to a minimum. After a cursory examination of archival photos, I cannot find a data block on any U-2 model.

Yes, the early model U-2 airframes were tested at Groom Lake. The first production batch of 20, ordered by the CIA, were built in Burbank. the second production batch of 30 were built in Oildale. Later production took place at Burbank and Palmdale.
