You weren't lied to bud. The majority of the Area II WSA is storage and maintenance of conventional and practice munitions. These are used in training ops on the Range and operated by the 57th Wing. Furthermore, non flying AF units are always changing designations and assignments. When I worked at Area II my unit changed MAJCOMs 3 times, and unit designations twice. Perhaps the 896/3096 is designated as something else now, or perhaps their operations have been moved. Besides, the AF's official position on the WSA is they can "neither confirm nor deny" anything.
