Area 51 birdstrike reports to the FAA?

Greetings,

Long time reader first time poster! Came across an interesting item on the faa.gov site. At the bottom of the Airport Technology R&D Branch page, there is a section titled, "Access to the FAA National Wildlife Aircraft Strike Database". There are seperate links under this title for Area 51 and Area S among others. Naturally, these links are password protected. I find it odd that someone involved in flight operations (flight crew or otherwise) out there is actually taking the time to fill out and submit a bird/wildlife strike report to the FAA. What do they put under "aircraft type" in that section of the report and what benefit could this reporting provide to the general flying public?
