One of the phenomena of the desert areas is the fact that light many times appears much, much closer than it is...........One time I traveled from Phoenix to Kingman via Hwy 93 (by Wikieup)...It was winter and night came early and well before I got Rte. 66 (now I40)....leaving the last mountain range to a valley before reaching 66 I could see to my NWW lights of Kingman.....I assumed I would be there quickly. Wrong! it took me another 1 1/2 to 2 hours......
You didn't say if the "rings" were vertical or horizonal..........If you could hear the "explosions" from 50 miles to Stateline then the activity was much closer than the NTS.
Vertical rings? Maybe sonic booms?.... Horizonal rings, "flares"? fireworks? I would rule out rocket launches.......but you never know....
