I certainly cannot discount the hacking hypothesis. I have no direct hard data one way or the other. The version I heard is that the operators fell asleep. Yeah, I know, it sounds absurd on the face of it. Then again, more often that you would think possible, you hear about airliner crews (both captain and copilot) drifting off into slumber during flight. So, it's certainly possible.
