The Janet Fleet
The Janet Airline was set up by the DoD to ferry workers to and from several locations in the Nevada Ranges and various plants. Contracted out to the company EG&G, and based at Las Vegas International Airport, the airline has its own dedicated terminal building and parking area, which is strictly off limits to anyone who does not work at the sites. Heavily armed security are guarding the gates at all times. Hundreds of workers get on these flights each day and the parking lot is always packed with cars.
There are regular flights in Boeing 737's from Las Vegas to Groom Lake and Tonopah Test Range/Sandia Labs. The workers there are flown in in the morning, and flown back to Las Vegas in the late afternoon. The planes are easy to recognize by the red stripe and the absence of airline markings (see photos below).
In addition to the above locations, there are also flights from the Las Vegas Janet Terminal to Edwards AFB North Base and Palmdale A.F Plant 42. At Plant 42, EG&G have their own small terminal. These routes are done mostly by Beech Super King Airs, light twin engine aircraft, operated by JT3. However we have also seen Boeing 737's flying out of Plant 42.
History of the Janet Fleet: The first Janets operated by EG&G were two DC-6 aircraft that were acquired in 1972 and 1976. Both were retired in October 1981. The first Boeing 737 was N4515W, acquired in June 1980. Three months later followed N4510W, and another three months later N4508W. Three more 737s joined the fleet in 1983, 1984, and 1986. In the early 1990s most of the older Janet 737's were retired and replaced with newer 737-200's. Between November 2008 and July 2009 the 737-200's were once again replaced with newer 737-600's, which ironically were purchased from Air China.
Below is a list of all current aircraft of the Janet Fleet, with background information and, in most cases, a photo of the actual aircraft. The Beech Turboprops, although technically not Janets, are also listed. Click here for more information, photos and a flight schedule. Thanks to our reader Andrew Campbell for providing the history information!
Minor maintenance on the Janets is done in the large Hangar 18 at Area 51 as well as at TTR. Major maintenance and repairs are done at Snohomish County Airport (Paine Field, "KPAE") near Everett, WA. The Janets fly up there on a regular basis.
