For the record: That show runs here as "Inside Area 51" every couple of months on Discovery Channel. Although for the most part decent quality, interviewing that Popular Mechanics reporter and giving him a chance to spread his lies to an even wider audience was not a good idea, to say the least.
Facts: Area 51 is far from being closed, the Janet flights from Vegas fly in 1000+ workers from Vegas every weekday. The white bus transports dozens of workers from nearby towns there every day. The gate that they showed as the abandoned gate of Area 51 is in fact the gate of Gunnery Range 61. The abandonned building that they showe as the "ruins of Rachel" is about 50 miles away from Rachel, in Crystal Springs.
When you drive down Groom Lake Road on any given day, at any given time, you will see the cammos by the signs, and if you are lucky see the Pave Hawk doing its rounds. Unless you hike up to Tikaboo peak you wont see the base, but you'll see all kinds of security devices etc. Guarding a closed base? I think not... Have a great trip to Rachel!
