Wasn't the F-104 the basic airframe the U-2 was derived from? The F-104 actually stood combat alerts in Vietnam in case the North Vietnamese tried to use airpower below the DMZ. The plane may have been a point defense interceptor, with short legs, but damn it was a good looking bird.
