There's an article in the lastest edition of Nevada Magazine about a bus tour that leaves Culver City, Calif. and travels to Nevada--via Rhyolite (Ghost town), then down highway 95 to Mercury and also down Groom Road Road to the signs.
This particular tour included Phil Patton and Mark Farmer (Agent X). If any of of can obtain a copy of the mag...it's fun reading.
BTW....I scanned the article. May be good reading for tech buffs....not much info on the base itself, of course.
