The Linear Aerospike project was basically a flying wind tunnel. It contained a scale model lifting body inside it, and when the SR-71 got up to cruise speed (i.e Mach 3), it made for an ideal flying lab. The test controller sat in the RSO seat of the SR, and could control the lifting body inside its chamber.

SWK's description is similar to, but not exactly like Aerospike's shape. The Aerospike project was completed in late 1998, however the flying wind tunnel may have been adapted for other 'shapes'.

The NASA Dryden web site has some info and pictures on this programme. I don't have the URL handy - sorry!
