Actually the made-up stuff is not as interesting as the real-life stories of some of the pilots that have been-there, done-that. A friend of mine was a Vaark driver and also flew F-4's and relates stories of some LT sitting ground alert in his F-4 overseas, and accidentally armed his on-board nuclear weapon by putting in ramdom PAL codes. Since they cannot be disarmed from the cockpit or in-theatre, the shit hit the fan. The stories about Vaarks hitting Tripoli when the tail-end Charlie knew before he launched that the way the strike package was setup he was never going to clear the target alive, but launched anyway, is better than what Dale Brown (an ex-BUFF driver) can make up. BTW, the Vaark driver and his copilot died over Tripoli. Browns' books are interesting though. Clancey's "Red Storm Rising" although dated, is still a page-turner too. My friend Dick Marcinko's books are good for ground combat and Spec Ops stuff, but It's almost an aquired taste.
