Our F/A-18s are 'A' models with upgraded 'C' standard avionics, but retaining the lower output engines. The MiG will out-turn the F/A-18A (assuming pilot skills are the same), and is about equal to the F/A-18C with the higher output engines. The '29' also has good alpha performance, especially at low speeds, although you're right when you say it cannot match the '18'.

The '29' can , however, do the cobra manoeuver but cannot hold it like the Su-27 can. This is spectacular at airshows, but has few tactical merits unless you're in a really tight dogfight with guns only. It's kind of like 'Maverick' slowing down and hitting the airbrakes causing his opponent to overshoot in 'Top Gun'. It's spectacular, but you'd never do it real life because if anyone is close enough to you for you to do that, you're already dead!

Nice talking to you. Email me if you want - Joerg has my email address.
