The F-111 has a MTOW of over 100,000lbs, nearly double that of the Tornado, so we're not comparing apples with apples here anyway (or should I say, Tac with Strat!).

Like I said, I've got the utmost respect for the Tornado guys, and they share a strong bond with our F-111 guys. It certainly takes BIG stones to hand fly at 50ft at 650kts, even over flat terrain! Because of the terrain around northern NSW and southern QLD where our F-111 guys usually fly, they prefer to fly hands off at 250ft on the 'hard' TFR setting. I did it on the simulator a couple of years ago, and even that made me a little air sick! Imagine being a nav with your head buried in the attack scope whilst doing that!!! (Bllluuurrrggghhh...! Now, where's that bucket?)

One of our senior F-111 navigators (Fltlt 'Box' Jarvis) has just gone over to UK to do a 2 year exchange with the recce Tornados. Should do well, he's a future leader for sure. Keep an eye out for him if you get a chance.
