S4 is no longer a mystery, and has been discussed here at length previously on many occasions. S4 is the designation for one of the contractor sites at Groom Lake, and has basically been proven to NOT be a secret UFO base at Papoose Lake as claimed by Lazar.

As for comparing what they could have now, compared to what they had in the 70's..., we have to remember that just because they CAN do something, doesn't mean they are! You can't just go and spend many billions of dollars on a new advanced aircraft any more, unless there is deemed to be an operational requirement now or in the future, or if there is an advancement to be tested that has applications in the near future. Gone are the days of the 50's and the 80's where there was money to burn in any defense budget. The arms race killed the Soviet Union as an entity...the war has been won.

There is still a place for an advanced type in any air force, but only as a 'silver bullet' to clear the way for the more conventioanl aircraft to do their thing. Thats why there are only 55 F-117s, and 21 B-2s, and will probably only be about <300 F-22s.

There will probably be an advanced long range tactical strike/recce aircraft emerge in the next few years, but I suspect we will mainly see new types coming out in the next decade or two with more conventional mass produced internal systems, and more basic airframes with LO features added. As an example, watch for things like an F-15F fighter with phased array radar and advanced EW systems, or perhaps something like the F-16XL with a new engine and systems to re-emerge.

The JSF is a case in point..., it is 5 years behind the F-22, yet is less capable. It is designed for mass production, and for many different missions. It borrows engines and some airframe design cues from the F-22, but also some internal systems from more conventional types such as F/A-18 and F-16, as well as some 'off-the-shelf' software and hardware.
