I read that the US and Japanese were so relieved after studying the MiG-25, becasue it was nowhere as capable as what they had originally believed. The only thing it was good for was time-to-climb, and a very brief Mach 2.8 dash. It couldn't turn for shit, the radar was crap, it weighed way to much because it was made out of stainless steel, it had no range, and the instruments and avionics were strictly 50's vintage.

It was designed to be purely GCI (Ground Controlled Intercept) controlled to intercept bombers, and the main reason they were based at Vladivostok (where the defection came from) was to try to counter the A-12s and later the SR-71s flying out of Kadena in Japan. BTW - they never came close!
