I'll kick in my two cents worth.
It was a couple years ago since I read the article but if I recall correctly he really didn't get that close to Groom Lake. He was not too far from Papoose.
I personally believe that the security isn't that great along the route shown on his map. The Test Site is a large area and the cost to secure it would be too high. There are probably areas within (such as right around Groom) that have good security, but the rest probably leaks like the San Francisco 49ers defense.
