I don't buy the part about not knowing where he was. A GPS is pretty cheap. I don't believe anyone would try such a trek without one.

I like how the path of his journey is done on the Nellis Range map. ;-)

Regarding water, there was a recent story in the news paper about a man who is bicycling (sp) along the west coast to Mexico. I forget the cause. He didn't bring water, but rather just drank what he could find along the way in streams and such. There are also filtration kits you can buy for these extended hikes. Personally, I bring as much water as I can carry and still don't have enough.
