I believe Chuck used a regular 500mm f/8 lens, with a 3x adaptor, to make it 1500mm f/24. He is very knowledgable about photography, and I am sure he would be glad to discuss this with Gary. Unfortunately he does not have email yet.
Gary and I recently spent some time further enhancing Chucks photos. I think the results are quite impressive.
I don't think it is possible to get that kind of results from Tikaboo, over twice as far away, but a clear day and the light setup in the early morning will definitely help.
