You dont need a helical for SATCOM. I use a home made X-dipole for receiving SATCOM.
AFSATCOM starts at around 243MHz and ends at around 244.00 MHz innitially. After that and upwards there are a few drips and drabs in amongst the 250's and so on.
The most extensive user of 250MHz up to 270MHz is the USNAVY FLTSATCOM not AFSATCOM like you suggested.
Then you have MARISAT inbetween the both users.
You'll find alot of X-dipoles being used around the globe and alot of special forces use a folded X-dipole to use their secure net.
Mobile folded X-dipoles are discrete and thus are used more than the helical dipoles.
Yes, the larger stations may have Helical antennas but not all.
Some just use dishes as do some forces on the ground.
Go to a proper communications site like the 423rd USAF communications unit here in England and you'll find alsorts being used.
