They may have a 'local' warning system at Groom, but you can bet the whole Nellis range from LV to Tonopah is also monitored by Nellis controllers, as well as Los Angeles Centre Air traffic control who look after the whole south west. Anything not squawking the appropriate IFF codes will quickly be identified, especially if they are off the main air corridors, or have not filed a flight plan.

Stingers fall into the 'MANPAD' category of SAM, that is 'MAN Portable Air Defence'. Not only can they be mounted on racks on a wing pylon, but they can also be fired from a shoulder held launcher.

I double checked the numbers required to support a 2-3 ship F-15 detachment, and you can generally guess about 10 maintenance personnel per jet for normal ops, plus aircrews. These numbers go up considerably (20+ per jet) if supporting 24 hours alert ops.

Joerg, do you have information on the take-off and approach profiles flown by the 'Janet' flights into and out of Groom? If so, can you describe these? From which direction do the prevailing winds come?
BTW - the magazine is in the mail by air mail this morning. It should be there by end of next week or early the week after.
