Thanks for the interesting article. That area of the world has often been caught in the middle of the Cold War (remember that) to the extent that recon balloons dating back to the fifties had notices in Urdu on the sides that stated that "This is a weather instrument, please contact the local authorities", so it was pretty obvious that India/Pakistan was a possible landing spot. Quite possible it was a off-course (maybe) Unmanned Recon aircraft, or the remnants of a Chinese or Russian launch, although I'm not sure the direction of the shots, that would be possible to predict. Since the newspapers have a tendency to report stories "dumbed down" either by accident or design, the details like the size, shape, and witness accounts have to be read with an open mind. Sounds like something happened that caused a large multi-national response, but what it could be is very vauge. Since the Pakis are very touchy about their neighbor (they both have nukes now, and both are trying to get a delivery system working). Anything that falls unexpectantly from the sky will be given a lot of attention. I'd bone up some on the aerospace details like supersonic helicopters and tom cruise SAM's though, the analyists on this page are sharp for that kind of error.
