I think I would need a focal length closer to 2000, with a larger mirror. A friend did a calculation and a Meade ETX90 will resolve about 36 lines per mm on 35mm film. I have a hard time imagining hiking with a 8 inch telescope on my back.

The ETX90 is a good place to start. They are pretty cheap on the used market. I now have the metering technique under control so that I could meter other scopes with confidence that the slides would be properly exposed. Focusing on an image that is wiggling in desert heat is another story....
