From what I understand, Boeing/Rocketdyne had been working on the powerful and efficient linear aerospike engine that is vital to the success of the X-33 prototype and VentureStar launch vehicles. (according to their website). I am not sure if the work is ongoing or not at the Simi Valley site not far from Hwy 118. I just heard from another resident near Chatsworth area that the noise resembles more of deep rumbles than loud noise and is often heard at night.
Last year there were apparently many reports of huge semi-trucks hauling large materials to the site, off of Hwy 118.
