I waited for the local news to give the exact moment of the launch, then ran out to my balcony to see it myself. At first it looked just like a firework being fired half a mile away, appearing to rise at about the same speed although Vandenburg is over 100 miles northwest of my home. Then as it went through some coastal fog, the rocket's exhaust lit up the clouds in a strange square shape, something I had not seen before! I juggled between camcorder and camera to get some shots, my digicam being unavailable at the time. It rose steadily and vanished a minute later, leaving only a strange greenish glow behind. Had it taken off just a half hour earlier, it's exhaust trail would have been illuminated by the setting sun and would have left an even more impressive sight in the sky, as they have in previous firings. It was an impressive sight!
