10x50's are certainly betther than nothing, but I recommend 20x50's. I picked up a pair for $70 on sale a little while ago.
Have you considered a 2x or 3x converter, instead buying a new lens. If you have a good 300mm (eg. f/4), you get a decent 900mm lens (f/12) with a 3x converter.
Andre had a Celestron C-90 spotting scope on the hike. With an adaptor it worked fine with his camera (what type was it Andre?), but showed a lot of vignetting with my Canon EOS.
You can get a used C-90, or Meade ETX-90 for about $250, plus the adaptor. But make sure to try it with your camera first, to see if it works ok.
