Jeff, I apologize for not responding to your post earlier. I was quite tied up with the recent unfortunate events in this forum. Now that that is taken care of I can return to my research work.
First, to rule out possible very mundane explanations: Two things come to mind: You said the sighting was around dusk. Could it be reflections from the planes fuselage, while it was still in sunlight in high altitude?
Also, I quite often see very bright flashes from fighter jets and also commercial airliners out in the desert. It seems that the planes anti collision lights can appear to flash very bright even from high altitude, if the plane is in the right position or angle. What you typically see is the ACL's flash normally, and every few flashes appear very bright. The first time I saw this I was so sure I was onto something...
Do you think that we can safely rule out these two possibilities?
