Ian The road to Rachel (highway 375) is very deserted and straight for miles. Best try to schedule your trip during a red flag exercise. Good luck.
I was in Vegas recently. I rented a car and drove to Rachel. It was fun - but quite lonely (did it at night). The drive takes 3 hours at 75 mph. watch out for loose cattle - as its open range out there. At night - you don't want to turn a cow into a hood (bonnet) ornament. There are a couple of small towns along the way. best take some food and beverages (I would advise against beer etc).
In Rachel - the Al'e'inn has food and booze.
I spent a little time stopped on the shoulder of the road and looked up at the sky. Nothing to see.
