A BS degree in physics is a good start, AND a good record--not that I didn't ever do anything bad, I just never got caught! An equivalent degree in electronic engineering would also do. The government will then train you in the specifics required for your job--they have some really good schools, especailly the Navy Post Graduate School at Monterey CA.
