When you buy a new car in CA, it doesn't come with plates. You have to wait for six weeks or so until they come in the mail. In June, I made a few trips to Vegas with no plates at all and didn't get bothered - it's a little weird driving with no plates at all, but it's completely legal since it takes time for plates to arrive.

I wonder what the reaction would be if I had driven up to the border of A51 with no plates. Maybe next time I get a new vehicle I'll find out.
