Let's not forget the English Electric Lightning, protyped somewhere around the mid 50s this Mach 2 UK interceptor was an extrememly rapid and manoeverable solution to the threat from Russian bombers.

I can recall Lightnings going vertical at an airshow in 1969, talk about noisy and as impressive as hell.

Basically they were 2 Rolls Royce engines stacked on top of one another, with wings and a tail and a pilot perchered on top, almost as an after thought.
