In the past several years, focus on developement in the Las Vegas area has shifted to North Las Vegas. It used to be concentrated in Summerland and then Henderson. Just listen to the ads heralding the new Del Webb/Pulte master-planned comunity of Aliante. Land values will increase for both residential and commercial properties. The USAF is scared that commerical development of that land north of the base is inevitable. They are uncomfortable with the racetrack and it's surrounding buildings. MG Johnson mentioned the race track in his briefing. The USAF jumped all over a proposal to build homes near Apex last year. Apex is nine miles north of the base. An accident or incident involving live ordinance in that area could cause huge problems....especially if developed. Accidents have happened in that area. Many of us have found damaged aircraft parts. 65% of all peacetime live ordinance is expended by Nellis. A public outcry could force that aspect of the Nellis mission to move to Indian Springs.
