Producers are the final word but the leeway the editors are give varies, and goes down to the level of detail. If neither party has a good understanding of the equipment they are using on the program, then it's moot. Besides a lot of producers are women and generally women do not know the difference between a UH-1 and AH-64 and a HH-60. The few people that know the real equipment used at Groom Lake are very few, most of them dialled into DLR, so yes, few would know the difference and walk away with bad information. Another REAL GOOD reason NOT to belive something just because "it's on TV". Most TV people I know are not Brain Surgeons, more like brain donors, so beware.
