EDITORIAL: The Roswell secret

There is no secret Air Force base at Groom Lake, inside Area 51, at the northeast corner of the huge Nevada Test Site, due south of the little Route 375 refueling stop of Rachel.

Never was, according to the federal government.

But so concerned is the nation's security apparatus about keeping secret a base that the Russians have known about for decades, and of which satellite photos have been widely posted on the Web, that last Thursday it raided the rented trailer home of 57-year-old Rachel resident Chuck Clark, looking for evidence Mr. Clark may have dug up motion sensors planted on land open to the public, photographed them, recorded their GPS coordinates, and then "put them back" ... just as Mr. Clark will happily tell anyone that he has done.

They use the sensors to make sure no one approaches the secret base which isn't there, you see.

But it's not really funny when armed government men seize property out of private homes when the residents aren't there. Especially if the revelations on which they're trying to have a "chilling effect" have nothing to do with crime or terrorism.

Other than the taxpayers who foot the bills -- and a few jurors who might award damages to the widows of workers not fully informed of the risks -- from whom is all this stuff really being kept secret, anyway?

It's the guys from the home planet of the critters who crashed at Roswell, right? They're the ones we need to keep out. We knew it.
