Developers of a unique ‘folding wing’ UAV say a test model will be drop tested from an Army Black Hawk helicopter soon. The UAV - called LEWK (for loitering electronic warfare killer) uses compressed air to inflate a semi-rigid wing (and tail) structure which is folded on top of the missile shaped body. ‘The concept is to treat the UAV as a bomb. The services all understand bombs. They’re easily stored and handled,’ says Marty Meyer, head of the project. Once deployed, a LEWK is designed to carry payloads into combat - including small but powerful jammers designed to blanket enemy air defences.
