Photos at "the line"?

I had the opportunity to visit the area with a friend last week. We drove up to Rachel from Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon. Stopped and talked to the folks at the gas station and then drove back to the "mailbox" and over to Groom Lake Road.

As we approached the "line" (maybe ~1 mile away), we could already see dust from a vehicle approaching from the other side. When we crested the hill and came within view of the warning signs at the line, a Ford truck with camo dudes was already waiting on us sitting on a hill overlooking the road. Within seconds, a 2nd truck (a Chevy) pulled up.

We had intended to take a photo of ourselves standing in front of the sign at the line, but we were both a little "spooked" by our reception. We turned around and headed back up Groom Lake Road and out to the highway. We could later see dust which looked as if one of the camo dudes vehicles was following behind us to make sure we left.

I was just wondering (1) how did they know we were coming? and (2) the sign cleary says "use of deadly force authorized" and "no photography of this area allowed" (or something like that). Will taking a photo in front of the signs at the line result in a visit to the sheriff's office?

Thanks in Advance,
Hugh
