Well, its 26 miles away, so you need good optics and a clear day. I have been up there on days when it was so hazy that you could not see the base at all. OTOH, on a clear day you can see some detail. See the "Area 51 Info" section for some panorama photos that I took from there on a clear morning. That is about as good as it gets.

Best viewing is early in the morning, just after sunrise. With the sun behind you and before the heat "wiggles" set in.
