Jerry had pretty good survival skills. He retraced almost the entire path of the lost '49ers. He ran out of food on his last days in the restricted area and had to eat grubs. He also completed a trek from Death Valley to California's highest peak, an elevation gain of over 14,000'. He was a true desert rat. Someone with "no real survival skills" would have died in the restricted area or gotten caught. I believe environemntal protestors have violated the restricted area in the past. As I recall, they generally surrendered to security when they realized they were helpless out there.
