Let us not forget that when the F4 was designed it was equipped with missiles only because it was believed that this was the future of air combat and there would be no close range "dog fighting".
The experience of high attrition rates in the Vietnam war soon put paid to that thinking and the canon pod was quickly designed and integrated.
Interesting how military planners manage to get it so wrong, even with all the information at their fingertips. I seem to remember the English navy doing similar things through the years, through believing in battleships for far too long and for wanting to produce modern ships without a deck gun. A quick check will soon show that even future designs incorporate 4.5" or similar. Looks like the ole lump of lead propelled down a tube by a firework will be with us a while yet.
