The Space Shuttle Columbia's actual ground track passed slightly over 2 miles south of Rachel at an altitude of 224,500 feet above sea level. The surface weather was calm with a thin high overcast, but the strength and direction of any upper level winds will be a factor in the direction and distance from the actual flight path that any possible debris might have fallen. Also, tiles and any other debris would have unstable aerodynamic qualities that would throw another variable into the mix. I've been keeping a sharp eye out, but it's a really big desert and chances of success are probably about that of visually finding a needle in a hundred haystacks.
