I'm not sure what you mean about the terrain playing tricks? There is one spot in the road that is a bit nasty that is quite easy to avoid on the way to roadblock canyon, but invisible on the way back. I have it logged on my GPS with a nasty word so I remember to drive around the spot on the way back. Even if you find a spot where you only (ha ha) need 200ft of extra elevation, what will you do? Use a balloon? At 10 miles you could possibly get away with a canon image stabilized lens plus teleconverter on a digital camera with TV output so that you could aim it. However, I think you might want to tell the rental shop a different story when you rent the gear.
